The Genesis of Joy Consulting LLC

When my son Khyle, who has maintained a 4.0 GPA since 5th grade, does not make the National Honor Society, I have questions. As any loving and concerned mother does, I visit Khyle's school to understand the selection process. While there, I request a multi-year audit of the school's National Honor Society selections. Undeniably, black and brown kids with qualifying grades are being inducted less based on subjective and biased criteria—creating a huge disparity. I find this unacceptable.

I challenge the administration to give fairer reviews in its selection process--not just for my son, but all the kids who look like him. If black and brown students work hard and qualify for the National Honor Society, they will be granted that right.

What starts as a genuine concern for my black son, rapidly becomes a much bigger opportunity. The administration eventually invites me to join the staff to help with the issues from my POV. I leave my corporate career soon after to work full-time as their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer. I later form Joy Consulting LLC.

We now consult not only in the education arena but also in the corporate sector. The formation of Joy Consulting LLC is an answer to a call to be a voice for the black and brown kids and employees who need one.

Dana Jamierson

I’m Dana and as CEO of Joy Consulting LLC and in my newly created position of Liason for students of color with the Lakeview School District, I’m on a mission to close the Achievement Gap for students of color--one school district at a time! I bring my 23+ years of hospitality management and corporate regional management experience to the Michigan school districts to create equitable education opportunities for students of color. I’m making dreams a reality for the students of Lakeview—raising money to provide support and resources so our kids can be exposed to career opportunities and grow from experiences that impact them for a lifetime. I’m reaching parents of the students through the first ever, Lakeview African-American Parent Network, which has a full board and a 501(c)(3) status. I’ve also appointed Liaison Ambassadors to provide internal and external support to each principal for the success of their respective school’s administrators, students and parents.

I’m a passionate supporter of educational equity. In addition to working tirelessly to create a more equitable and accessible education system for all, here are a few more of my notable achievements:

In partnership with the University of Michigan’s BSU, Dana opened the first Black Student Union (BSU) at the Lakeview High School campus Instituted the first ever HBCU Hub within the high school, mirroring the University’s student services department

Created and launched the Douglas and Dr. Salena Johnson Scholarship (awarded to 2 deserving students for tuition and fees)

As a direct by-product of my efforts, the Lakeview administration is seeing a reduction in drop-outs and suspensions and more students of color being inducted into the National Honor’s Society.

My future plans include establishing a support staff to develop, package and grow my brand across all districts. I believe with everything in me that we can together to make our communities better...stronger!
